The English Mystery Plays Seek a Well Natured Ass!
With less than 3 weeks to opening, The English Mystery Plays are urgently seeking a well natured ass to appear in their epic outdoor production
With casting well underway, Director John Kelly and Producer Lee Batty are still seeking to cast one of the production’s most important members – the ass that will accompany Jesus into Jerusalem.
The ass will need to be well natured, docile, with an owner or keeper who is also fully committed to the production. Both will need to attend rehearsals as necessary, and the ass will appear in each of the 12 performances taking place from June 29 – July 11.
The lucky ass will receive payment in hay or feed and of course a priceless opportunity to star in the UK’s only outdoor performance of mystery plays, with a possibility of breaking into the acting circuit, they may even steal the limelight!
If you have or know of someone who has just the right ass for the job, please contact Ruth Atkinson at the Barnsley Lamproom Theatre on 01226 249611.

The English Mystery Plays are looking for a real, live ass (this is not a hoax!). There may be a photo opportunity following the casting of the ass. Originally performed in churches during the Middle Ages, Mystery Plays became increasingly bawdy and were eventually ousted into the marketplace in an effort to distance them from the church. Enhancing the traditional comical nature of the Mystery Plays, will be one of South Yorkshire’s rising stars, comedian, actor and radio presenter Toby Foster. With credits including Sheffield’s Last Laugh Comedy Club and Phoenix Nights under his belt, Toby is well suited to the impish nature and naughty antics of the play’s narrator. Tickets are available from The Lamproom Theatre, Westgate, Barnsley, or by telephoning the Ticket Hotline on 01226 321741.
